Discover how to maintain the perfect chemical harmony of your pool with Swim Care Pool Services! We’re here to guide you through the importance of Cyanuric acid (CYA), also known as pool stabilizer, and how to effectively manage its levels in your pool.
CYA plays a pivotal role in protecting your pool’s chlorine from the sun’s harmful UV rays. However, an excess of it can disrupt the water’s chemistry. This is why we’re providing insights on how to decrease excessive CYA levels to maintain your pool’s health.
What Causes CYA?
Increased CYA levels are typically linked to stabilized chlorine. Most chlorine tablets or granules are made of dichloride and trichloride, which contain minor amounts of CYA. The continuous use of stabilized chlorine leads to a buildup of CYA levels, even as the chlorine levels may fluctuate.
CYA doesn’t evaporate with water; hence, it’s important to monitor and stop adding stabilized chlorine when necessary. The ideal CYA level should be between 30 and 50 parts per million or around 80 parts per million for a saltwater pool. In case of excessive levels, the solution lies in diluting your water by partially draining and refilling the pool.

Before proceeding with dilution, make sure to test the water. If your CYA levels are considerably high, take a water sample to your local pool store for an accurate reading. While draining, remember to keep the water level above the skimmer to avoid running your pump dry. Post-draining, refill the pool with fresh water and retest the water to verify the new CYA levels.
While chemical alternatives like CYA reducers exist, they are not only costly but also come with their own set of limitations, like not working if you’ve added clarifiers, algaecides or phosphate treatments to your pool recently.
How Do I Lower Cyanuric Acid in My Pool?
Draining and refilling remain the most reliable method to reduce CYA levels. However, the ideal approach is prevention. Regular water testing and mindful use of stabilized chlorine will help you keep CYA levels in check.
